GSMS SUMMER FORAY

JULY 13-15, 2018

HAMPTON INN, WIGGINS, MS

Wiggins is located north of Gulfport/Biloxi. Co-Chief Mycologists will be “two wild & crazy guys” Jay Justice and David Lewis. Our hosted student is Allison Tarter of Nederland TX, a MS student in Aquatic Biology at Texas State Univ. at San Marcos, TX. She will present on her work.

The Hampton Inn & Suites, 1121 East Frontage Drive, Wiggins MS 39577 is on the east side of US 49, 1 mile south of the intersection with State Hwy 26. Turn left in between the Bank of Wiggins (just past Hall St) and Best Wok Restaurant, to the Inn in the rear. Check-in time is 3 PM.  Registration will begin at 3PM in the Rose Room, our meeting and display area.

Friday evening, for dinner, the Inn will cater a buffet in the lobby area of the hotel, or breakfast room, of chicken/spaghetti, salad and dessert @6-6:30 PM.   After dinner, there will be a presentation by CCM David Lewis on “Mushrooms of the Gulf Coast” and also a social in the Rose Room.

Saturday and Sunday mornings we will enjoy very tasty complete breakfasts in the breakfast area at the Hampton Inn.

Saturday morning, our field trips will depart from the hotel parking lot at 9AM, to the nearby Pascagoula River Wildlife Management Area   and to “Shroomdom”, the home, forests and cultivation lab of our members Tony and Leilani Rosenbaum, located near Poplarville, MS.  We will have lunch on our own at restaurants near, or as we return from, the foray sites. Please return to the hotel by 2:30 PM and take your specimens to the pre-sort area in the Rose Room.

We plan our annual business meeting at 4:30PM in the Rose Room.  Later, we will enjoy dinner in the lobby area of the Inn, at 6-6:30PM. Catering is by the hotel, the menu will be decided. After dinner, Allison Tartar will share the results of her latest project with us, probably on fresh-water mussels. Then there will be a presentation by CCM Jay Justice on Chanterelles, followed by a social.

After the mycologists identify the species collected, we will walk-around-the-tables on Sunday morning at 9:00 to hear a discussion of the different species of fungi and methods of identification. Checkout time is 12 noon, and we will depart for home. We hope to see you December 7-9 in Louisiana.
